3.3.5. Gaps of valves

GENERAL INFORMATION

Order of adjustment of a gap of valves

And – are regulated when the piston No. 1 is in VMT at the time of a compression step

In – are regulated when the piston No. 4 is in VMT at the time of a compression step

It is impossible to underestimate importance of the correct adjustment of gaps of valves as operation of the engine completely depends on it. If gaps are too big, the engine will work very loudly (in this case the crash and knock are characteristic) and the efficiency of the engine will be considerably reduced as valves will open too late and to be closed too early. Even more serious problems arise if gaps of valves are too small. In this case valves can not be closed completely when the engine is warmed that will cause serious damages of the engine (burned saddles of valves and / or a crack in a head of cylinders).

Adjustment of gaps of valves

Gaps of valves are checked by means of special probes of necessary thickness which are inserted between a yoke and a cam of the distributive valve. The probe has to enter a gap freely without excess effort.

PERFORMANCE ORDER

Prevention

The engine has to be cold when you check and regulate gaps of valves.


1. Uncover a head of cylinders (see subsection 3.3.6).
2. Install the piston No. 1 in VMT (see subsection 3.3.4).
3. Carry out an inspection of gaps of valves No. 1, 2, 3 and 6 (the valve No. 1 is located in a forward part of the engine, and the valve No. 8 – in a back part).
4. If carrying out adjustment is necessary, weaken a lock-nut and twist the adjusting screw of a yoke, do not receive the necessary thickness of a gap yet.
5. After you adjusted a valve gap, hold the adjusting screw in a motionless state and tighten a lock-nut till the necessary moment of an inhaling.
6. After you adjusted all four valves, turn a bent shaft on one whole revolution (360 °) that the piston No. 4 appeared in VMT.
7. Carry out an inspection and adjustment of gaps of valves No. 4, 5, 7, and 8 (see subitem 4-5).
8. After you carried out an inspection and adjustment of gaps of valves, establish a cover of a head of cylinders (see subsection 3.3.6).
9. Put on a cover of a gear belt and establish a protective plate of the engine.
